Where did coffee come from and when it arrive in Britain?

Coffee originated in Ethiopia and Sudan and was first cultivated in the 10th century in Yemen. It spread to the Middle East and Arabia, and then to the Ottoman Empire and Europe in the 16th century. Coffee arrived in Britain in the early 17th century, brought by a Turkish merchant named Pasqua Rosee. The first coffeehouse opened in London in 1652, and coffee quickly became a popular drink. By the end of the 17th century, there were over 3,000 coffeehouses in London, and coffee had become an integral part of British culture.
