How to Freeze Coffee Beans (5 Steps)

Wake up to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee even months after purchase. Nobody likes stale-tasting coffee, and with the high cost of some types of coffee beans, preserving the taste of your coffee after you buy it depends on how you store the beans. Moisture and heat act as enemies to degrade the flavor in the coffee beans, and their effects increase with ground beans. Freezing your coffee beans keeps them preserved for long-term storage until you can grind and brew them.

Things You'll Need

  • Whole coffee beans
  • Resealable freezer bags
  • Airtight container

Instructions

  1. Divide your coffee beans into resealable freezer bags in one-pot amounts, about ½ cupfuls.

  2. Push out as much of the air as you can and seal the bags.

  3. Place the bags into an airtight container and seal to create a double barrier against moisture and air, and freeze the coffee beans until ready to use.

  4. Remove only the bag of coffee you intend to use, leaving the others in the airtight freezer container. Open the freezer bag of coffee you will use one hour before grinding and brewing the coffee to let the beans come to room temperature.

  5. Use all of the frozen coffee at once, and do not refreeze thawed beans to prevent refreezing condensation that can negatively affect the taste of the beans.
