How to Make Froth for a Cappuccino Without Steam

A cappuccino is defined by the mugful of airy, rich milk foam that sits lightly upon a shot or two of espresso. While cafes and coffee shops may elevate making cappuccinos to an art form, it isn't particularly difficult to save some time and money by whipping up one of these comforting cups at home. Don't worry -- even if you don't have a fully decked-out espresso machine with a steam wand or any sort of milk frothing device, you can still make the froth for a cappuccino with minimal effort.

Things You'll Need

  • Microwave-safe container with lid
  • Whole milk
  • Spoon
  • Cinnamon or other topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour about 1/3 of a mugful of whole milk into a tall, microwave-safe container, such as a glass jar, with a lid. Don't fill the container more than half full with milk; you need to leave room for the milk to expand.

  2. Screw the jar's lid on tightly. Shake the milk as vigorously as you can for at least 30 seconds, until it's foamy and approximately doubled in volume.

  3. Remove the lid from the jar and put the container in the microwave. Microwave the milk for 30 seconds. This heats and expands the milk and froth and stabilizes the foam.

  4. Pour a small splash of hot milk from the jar into your espresso, then use a spoon to scoop froth into the mug, depositing it gently onto the espresso. Fill the mug to the brim with the foam. Add on a sprinkle of topping such as cinnamon, nutmeg or chocolate powder, if desired.
