How to Make a Caramel Frappe With Coffee & Ice Cubes
A caramel-flavored latte offers a jolt of caffeine to start the day, but hot coffee drinks aren't particularly refreshing on a hot day. A caramel frappe, a frozen coffee drink made with crushed ice, coffee and caramel flavoring, is cool and refreshing while offering the same caffeine found in a latte. While coffee shops use caramel flavor syrups, you can make a frappe at home with caramel syrup such as an ice cream topping or a caramel-flavored coffee creamer.
Things You'll Need
- Coffee maker
- Blender
- Caramel syrup
- Milk
- Sugar
- Chocolate syrup or vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
-
Brew coffee to double strength for the frappe, using twice as many coffee grounds as you usually use to make coffee. You can cool your coffee before making the frappe or use fresh hot coffee, although hot coffee requires more ice cubes to cool and can make the drink watered down.
-
Pour the coffee in a blender, using roughly 1 cup of coffee for each frappe serving.
-
Add caramel syrup, milk and sugar to taste. While you can add as much caramel as desired, a frappe usually includes about 2 tablespoons of caramel for each cup of coffee in the blender. Use roughly the same amount of milk and sugar as you would add to a regular cup of coffee. Chocolate syrup or vanilla extract can be added to the caramel frappe to taste, if desired.
-
Add ice cubes to the blender. The amount of ice cubes varies greatly depending on the size of the ice cubes, the number of servings you wish to make and the starting temperature of the coffee. You should only need about 4 to 6 ice cubes to make a frappe if you start with 1 cup of cool coffee. Blend the ingredients until the ice is thoroughly crushed and the ingredients are well incorporated. The finished consistency should be smooth enough to sip through a straw, but with visible ice pieces in the drink.
