How to Mix a Godfather Cocktail (3 Steps)

The Godfather is a simple, elegant after-dinner cocktail consisting of blended Scotch whiskey and Amaretto liqueur. It is one of the short list of official cocktails that the International Bartenders Association (IBA) uses in its World Cocktail Competition. The basic Godfather is fairly simple, but bartenders distinguish themselves by their variations and ability to mix the cocktails to taste.

Things You'll Need

  • Amaretto
  • Blended Scotch whiskey
  • Cube ice
  • Old-fashioned glass or other drink glass

Instructions

  1. Fill an old-fashioned glass with cube ice.

  2. Measure equal parts of Amaretto and Scotch into the glass (or "build" the drink over ice, as bartending lingo goes).

  3. Customize your Godfather recipe. A quick poll of Boston-area bartenders reveals some customizations, including a 3 to 1 ratio of Amaretto to Scotch; 3 to 1 of Scotch to Amaretto; and a splash of Anisette (the Italian licorice liqueur) swirled through the cubes and dumped.
