How to Make a Screwdriver Drink

According to an October 1949 edition of “Time” magazine, screwdrivers were created when American petroleum engineers in Saudi Arabia added vodka to canned orange juice and named the drink after their preferred stirring implement. Still going strong today, this refreshing, tall concoction of orange juice, vodka and ice makes for a crisp and inexpensive cocktail. You can serve screwdrivers at any occasion, from Sunday brunch to late-night parties around the pool.

Things You'll Need

  • Tall glass
  • Ice
  • Vodka
  • Orange juice
  • Long spoon or stirrer
  • Orange slices; optional

Instructions

  1. Fill a tall glass about halfway full of ice. Any size ice cube works, but avoid shaved or crushed ice, which melts quickly in the presence of alcohol.

  2. Pour approximately 2 ounces of vodka into the glass. Chilled vodka keeps the drink cold a little longer.

  3. Fill the rest of the glass with orange juice. Freshly squeezed orange juice with the pulp strained out tastes the freshest, but you can use any type of orange juice you like.

  4. Stir the drink with a long-handled spoon or stirrer and serve immediately. Garnish the rim with an orange slice if you like.
