If your water heater does not have an opening to the pilot light area, you will need to remove the front panel of the water heater to access the thermocouple. Here are the steps on how to do this:
1. Turn off the gas supply to the water heater.
2. Disconnect the water supply lines to the water heater.
3. Remove the screws that hold the front panel in place.
4. Carefully remove the front panel.
5. Locate the thermocouple. It is a small metal tube that is connected to the gas valve.
6. Disconnect the thermocouple from the gas valve.
7. Remove the old thermocouple.
8. Install the new thermocouple.
9. Reconnect the thermocouple to the gas valve.
10. Replace the front panel.
