How to Make Your Own Beer Kit
Making beer at home is a fun hobby; all it takes is the right equipment and the right ingredients. You can create your own beer kit from simple items for a fraction of the cost of the kits available for purchase at brew shops or other outlets. Many of the items you may already have in your home.
Things You'll Need
- 5-gallon food grade plastic pail with lid
- 3 feet of 1/4-inch tubing
- Quart-sized jar
- 1 tube of silicone
- Caulk gun
- Drill with 1/4-inch bit
Instructions
-
Wash and thoroughly clean a 5-gallon plastic pail that has a tight fitting lid. You can often get these pails for free by calling around to local restaurants and asking.
-
Drill a hole in the center of the lid. Wash the lid to remove any traces of plastic dust caused by the drill.
-
Insert one end of the tubing into the hole of the lid. Pull enough tubing through the hole so that the end of the tubing stops approximately 2 inches from the bottom of the pail.
-
Use the caulking gun loaded with the silicone tube and silicone around the tubing in the hole. Use the silicone only on the outside of the pail lid. Set aside to cure. This may take up to 24 hours, depending on the brand of silicone used.
-
Combine the ingredients for your favorite beer recipe and place the mixture into the pail.
-
Cover the pail with the lid, making sure the tubing is immersed in the liquid.
-
Take the free end of the tubing and place it into a quart-sized jar half full of water. The tubing and water act as an airlock, which helps the beer ferment.
-
Bottle your beer when ready. Clean and store your kit until you are ready to make your next batch.
