How to Convert LME to DME (3 Steps)

Homebrewers can be divided into two main groups: all-grain brewers and extract brewers. Extract brewers use liquid or dry malt extract in lieu of mashing and sparging numerous pounds of base malts. When drafting your homebrew recipes --- or adjusting existing recipes to fit your ingredient list and brewing style --- it's important to know how to convert liquid malt extract (LME) measurements to dry malt extract (DME) measurements.

Things You'll Need

  • Homebrew recipe
  • Calculator
  • DME
  • Digital scale
  • Bowl

Instructions

  1. Determine how many pounds of LME the homebrew recipe requires.

  2. Divide the number of pounds of LME required by 1.25.

For example, because 1 pound of DME equals 1.25 pounds of LME, a recipe that requires 8 pounds of LME would require 6.4 pounds of DME.

  3. Use the digital scale to measure the appropriate amount of DME needed for the recipe. Place the DME into a bowl and add it to the kettle at the same time LME would be added, per your homebrew recipe.
