How to Make Cups Out of Beer Bottles (5 Steps)
Turning wine bottles into drinking glasses began in in the 1960s when restaurant owners discovered that it was an effective way to reuse bottles that otherwise would have been thrown away. Since then, glass recycling has become more ubiquitous, but turning bottles into drinking glasses is a fad that makes frequent comebacks. While many restaurants bought a special tool to make a clean cut on the glass, anyone can cut beer bottles into glasses with just a few dollars spent at the hardware store.
Things You'll Need
- Beer bottle
- Thick work gloves
- Safety goggles
- Kerosene (or other liquid fuel)
- Fine emery cloth
- Lighter
- Cotton string
Instructions
-
Tie the cotton string around the base of the neck where you would like the glass to break. Keep in mind that having a narrow opening will make it difficult to drink from the glass. After making a double knot, remove the string and cut off the excess to form a loop.
-
Dip the string in kerosene and allow the excess to drip off. The string should be saturated with fuel, but it should not be soaked to the point that it will drip on the glass. Put the string back onto the bottle and be very careful to make the circle even around the bottle.
-
Rest the bottle on its side over a sink filled with a few inches of water and ignite the string. Once it has burned out, quickly submerge the top of the bottle into the sink. The outline of the string should form a clean break, although the edge of the glass will be too jagged to drink from.
-
Level out the rim of the glass by carefully grinding it. This can be done with a whetstone, a diamond-coated file (triangular or round), a grinding drill attachment, or a grindstone. Regardless of what you use, it is important to keep the tool and the glass wet. If possible, use multiple stones to grind the glass with a progressively finer grit.
-
Rub the rough edge of the glass with fine emery cloth until both the inner and outer sides of the glass have been rounded. Again, the emery cloth should be remain wet. Wash the finished glass thoroughly to clean off any fine glass particles. Pick up any glass shards in the sink with an old sponge than can be thrown away.
