Can You Freeze Gummy Candy in Ice Cubes?
Novelty ice cubes are a good way to get kids to drink their not-so-fun beverages and they also add an element of whimsy to adult mixed drinks. Gummy candies, like bears and worms, work well in ice cubes because they're flexible but still retain their flavor even when submerged in water. Put your favorite gummy candy in ice cubes for some exciting colors as well as child-friendly flavors.
Delicious Downsizing
-
The main thing to remember when freezing gummy candies into ice cubes is the size -- do not try to freeze a gummy candy that is larger than the spot in the ice cube tray. You can easily cut gummy worms or fish into smaller pieces, and it will not affect the taste or texture. The candies do not have to fit exactly into the space -- parts of the candy, such as a bear's head or a worm's body, may partially stick out of the hole as long as most of it is frozen.
Pretty Pigeonholing
-
Once you've found a suitable, clean ice tray, select your preferred smaller whole or chopped-up larger gummy candies. Place at least one gummy candy or sliced piece into each ice tray section. Because gummy candies are heavier than water, the candy will sink and will be on the bottom of the ice cube. To prevent this, fill anywhere from one-fourth to one-third of the ice tray holes with water, freeze to make partial ice cubes, add the gummy pieces, cover the candy with water, then freeze again. Another option is to fill the section with gummy candies, leaving only a little room for ice.
Get Your Freeze On
-
Depending on the size and the quantity of the gummy candies, it could take more or less time than it usually takes to freeze plain ice. To ensure that you have your gummy-filled ice cubes for your party, prepare and freeze them the night before. Store gummy candy ice cubes in the same way you would regular ones. Plastic freezer containers make good short-term storage.
Fun It Up
-
The flavor of gummy candies isn't the only thing you can add to your ice cube -- you can substitute the water with other beverages for interesting flavor combinations. Fruit-flavored beverages like lemon-lime soda and orange soda will complement the gummy candies' fruitiness. Ginger ale and cream soda will add a touch more sugar to the ice cubes. Juice-based beverages, like lemonade and limeade, also work well for gummy candy ice cubes, as do some juices like pineapple juice and orange juice. Fruit punches and energy drinks are also good choices for interestingly flavored ice cubes.
