Banana Cream Pie Decorations

Decorating a banana cream pie can be as quick or as complicated as you desire. The flaky pie shell filled with banana slices and vanilla custard or pudding has a rich flavor and a plain look that some bakers leave alone -- and others enhance. Dress up the open-top pie with light ingredients that will balance on the custard, such as sliced fruit. Most importantly, choose ingredients that pair well with the banana cream flavor.

Nothing Wrong With Classic

  • Banana slices and whipped cream are all you need to create a classic-looking banana cream pie. Spray or spoon a large circle of whipped cream in the middle of the pie and top it with a banana slice for a simple decoration. Or add small circles of whipped cream around the pie’s edge and top each one with a banana slice.

Flower Power

  • Don't hesitate to feature other fruits on top of your banana cream pie, especially if a floral motif is what you're after. Spray or spoon a small circle of whipped cream in the middle of the pie and top it with a maraschino cherry. Cut banana slices in half and arrange them around the cherry like petals around the center of a flower. Make eight small circles around the edge of the pie, spacing them evenly apart, and repeat the flower decoration on each. Use raspberries for the center if you want a tart twist to your pie, or use sliced strawberries for petals if you want a stronger berry flavor.

Game Time

  • Whipped cream in a spray can is the secret to creating a checkerboard design on your tasty pie. Or use a piping bag and round nozzle to create decorative lines. Create vertical lines, spaced a few inches apart, across the pie. Create horizontal lines, spaced a few inches apart, across the vertical lines. Place a chocolate chip wherever the lines meet and place a banana slice in each square to create a bold checkered pattern. Caramel and butterscotch chips complement the pie, too.

Halloween Pie

  • Flavored syrup and a toothpick are all it takes to design a spider web decoration for your pie. Choose from chocolate, caramel, butterscotch or strawberry syrup. Squeeze a thin ring of syrup around the edge of the pie. Move in an inch and create another circle. Repeat the process until the pie is covered in circles. Dip a toothpick into the edge of the pie and drag it toward the center. Move over a few inches and repeat the process, creating lines around the pie like spokes on a bicycle wheel. Place three banana slices in the middle of the pie and drizzle with syrup for a finishing touch.
