How to Make Roses for Cupcakes From Orange Slices

Creating rose cupcake decorations from orange slice jelly candies takes some time, but the elegant results are worth the effort. The pliable jellies are simple to roll, cut and press into any shape -- even a 3D rose. The sparkling sugar coating on the candy gives the flowers a hint of luster that helps them stand out from the cupcake frosting. Best of all, the decorations taste as good as they look.

Things You'll Need

  • Superfine sugar
  • Wax paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Sharp knife
  • Pastry brush

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle a clean rolling surface with superfine sugar. Place a single orange slice candy on the prepared surface and sprinkle with sugar. Cover the candy with a piece of wax paper. Roll the candy out to around 1/8 inch thick. Pick the candy up occasionally and flip it over during the rolling process to keep it from sticking to the surface.

  2. Cut a 5-inch wide and 4-inch tall oval shape on the rolled out candy using a sharp knife. Cut the oval in half horizontally so the remaining shapes have long, flat bottoms with gently curving tops. Set one oval half aside to use in another rose. Starting at one thin end, roll the remaining oval half up into a rosebud shape. Pinch the bottom of the roll together. Set rosebud aside.

  3. Cut three, 3-inch long petal shapes from the rolled out candy. Brush the bottom of each petal with a light coat of water. Press the bottom of a petal against the bottom of the rosebud, pinching the petal to the bud. Repeat the process two more times to create a rose. Add more petals, as desired, to increase the rose size. Pinch the bottom of the rose together as you press the top of the petals outward so the rose looks open.

  4. Repeat entire process as needed to create multiple roses.
