Should you add jelly to thumb print cookies before or after baking?

Jelly is not typically added to thumbprint cookies. Instead, a small indentation is made in the center of each cookie before baking, and after the cookies come out of the oven and are still hot, a spoonful of jam or jelly is placed in the indentation.
