Who was the first person to create chocolate?

There is no one definitive answer to this, as the origins of chocolate are lost in time and legend. However, the first known civilisation to cultivate cacao plantations and process cacao beans into a drink was the Maya civilization of Central America. They began cultivating cacao trees around 2500 BC, with evidence of its ceremonial and medicinal use at least as early as 1500 BC. The word 'cacao' is also derived from the Mayan word 'kakaw'.
