About Mentos
Mentos were created in 1932 when Michael and Pierre Van Melle toyed with different ideas for candy. As of 2009, both candy and gum were being sold under the Mentos name, which is branded under Perfetti Van Melle. Known as "The Freshmaker" in kitschy, easily recognizable commercials, Mentos are available internationally in different flavors depending on the country.
Candy
-
A sweet, crisp shell surrounds a crunchy layer in the same flavor as the soft, chewy center of these minty candies.
Gum
-
In 2005, Mentos gum was created. As of 2009, available types in the U.S. included Juice Blast (with liquid inside), Bubble Gum, Chewing Gum, Cube Gum!, Pure Fresh (with green tea extract), and White (maintains your teeth's whiteness).
Flavors
-
The original Mentos flavor was peppermint, although many other flavors have been introduced, such as cinnamon, strawberry, and green apple. Mentos are also available in berry sugar-free flavors. As of 2009, gum flavors included strawberry, lemon, orange, and several mint flavors.
Packaging
-
Originally, Mentos were packaged in brightly-colored rolls, which made them easily identifiable among other candy. As of 2009, they were also available in multipacks or small cigarette-style boxes.
Fun Fact
-
Dropping Mentos candy into carbonated sofa drinks can cause foam fountains to occur due to physics--the unstable state of the liquid reacts with microscopic craters on the candy's surface to produce a stream of tiny bubbles.
