What is the meaning of slicing cake in wedding?

The Tradition

Slicing and sharing the wedding cake is a traditional ceremonial that marks the first act the the couple performs together as husband and wife. It signifies their commitment to sharing everything in life, both the good and the bad.

A Little History

The tradition traces back to the Roman Empire, where is was believed the couple's first bite of cake would determine the gender of their first child; if the wife took the first bite, the couple would have a boy, but if the husband went first, the couple would have a girl.

In the Middle Ages, the wedding cake was often a flat bread baked with nuts, fruits, and spices. The bride and groom would break the cake over each other's heads as a symbol of fertility and good luck.

In modern times the cutting of the wedding cake is a symbolic gesture of the newlywed's commitment to shared partnership.

How To Do it Right

Cutting the wedding cake may seem like an easy task, but there is some proper etiquette involved:

1. Let the photographer take charge: Wait for the photographer to signal your queue before you start cutting.

2. Position Yourself: If the cake has multiple tiers don't cut all of the way to the bottom, make a few shallow slices and then pose for a photo. You'll move onto the actual cake-eating after the photo is taken.

3. Cake Serving Order: Traditionally, the newlyweds are served first, followed by the wedding party, and then guests.
