Making the top of the treasure chest cake round
To add extra material to the top of the cake to make it look rounded, you can use frosting or fondant.
Using Frosting
1. Ice the cake with a crumb coat of frosting and let it chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
2. Prepare a piping bag with your favorite frosting tip.
3. Start piping rosettes around the edges of the cake, closest to the top edge, working your way in towards the center.
4. Continue adding frosting to make it higher.
5. Use an offset spatula to smooth the frosting over the entire top of the cake.
6. Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to set the frosting.
7. Ice the cake with a final coat of frosting and smooth it over the entire surface.
Using Fondant
1. Roll out your fondant to a 1/4-inch thickness.
2. Place the fondant over the top of the cake and smooth it out with your hands.
3. Trim the excess fondant around the edges of the cake.
4. Use a fondant smoother to smooth out any imperfections in the fondant.
Chill the cake in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to set the fondant.
