How to Make Zingers (7 Steps)

Zingers are an American snack cake that come in three different flavors: devil's food, vanilla and raspberry. They are a soft cake with a cream filling, similar to Twinkies, but have an added layer of frosting on top. While store-bought Zingers are a perfect after-school snack, homemade Zingers can be surprisingly sophisticated. Making Zingers is not complicated, and they can make for delicious desserts at your next party.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup cake flour, sifted
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup confectioners sugar
  • 2 cups marshmallow cream
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 jar of vanilla frosting
  • Cooling rack
  • Mixing bowls
  • Mini loaf pans, greased
  • Electric mixer
  • Pastry bag with tip

Make the Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Combine the flour, sugar and baking powder in a mixing bowl. Add the eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla and mix thoroughly.

  2. Pour in half the milk and mix. Gradually add the rest of the milk, stirring continuously.

  3. Spoon the batter into the mini loaf pans. There should be enough to fill 9 or 10 pans. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in the oven, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

  4. Cool the cakes completely on the cooling racks.

  5. Meanwhile, combine the butter, confectioner's sugar, marshmallow cream, milk and the remaining teaspoon vanilla in a mixing bowl. Beat the filling with an electric mixer for about 3 minutes until it is smooth.

  6. Scoop the filling into a pastry bag. With the tip of the pastry bag, poke 3 holes into each of the cakes and fill the holes. Gently scrape off any excess filling with a knife.

  7. Mix the frosting with a knife until smooth. Carefully spread a layer of frosting on top of each of the cakes.
