Fondant has become a modern and creative way to decorate cakes. Fondant is a type of icing that you can roll, pour or create shapes with to add to a cake. Its smooth surface gives cakes a professional appearance. Although you can buy fondant pre-made at your local craft store, consider making your own fondant at home to save money. You can change the color of fondant by adding icing paste, and you can alter the taste of fondant by adding ingredients such as cocoa powder. Once you learn how to make your own fondant, you will be on your way to making beautiful cakes.

Things You'll Need

  • Glass bowl
  • 1 tbsp. gelatin
  • Small pan
  • 2/3 cup corn syrup
  • 1 tbsp. glycerin
  • ¼ cup solid white vegetable shortening
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 6 ¼ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 cups unsweetened powdered cocoa (non-alkalized)
  • Large bowl
  • Wooden spoon

Instructions

  1. Pour 1/3 cup water into a glass bowl. Gently sprinkle 1 tbsp. of gelatin over the water. Allow the gelatin to sit for 5 minutes.

  2. Fill a pan with a ½ cup of water. Allow the water to begin to simmer. Place the glass bowl with the gelatin in the simmering water. Stir the gelatin until it dissolves.

  3. Combine the corn syrup and glycerin with the gelatin. Stir until these ingredients are well blended.

  4. Add the shortening and stir until it melts. Remove the mixture from the heat. Mix in 1 tsp. of vanilla.

  5. Sift the powdered sugar and cocoa in a large bowl together. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. A well is an indentation made to combine wet and dry ingredients.

  6. Pour the gelatin mixture into the well. Stir the ingredients with a wooden spoon until they are completely blended.

  7. Use your hands to knead the fondant. Shape the fondant into a ball. Continue to knead the ball until it is smooth.

  8. Store the fondant in an airtight container until ready to use.
