How to Bake an Old Kentucky Black Walnut Cake

An Old Kentucky black walnut cake is a favorite Southern dessert. The cake itself is fairly simple, with the black walnuts being a key feature.   • ¾ cup shortening
  • 1 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 2/3 cup sifted flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped black walnuts
  • Fluted cake pan
  • Spoon
  • 2 bowls
  • Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix the shortening and the sugar together in a bowl.

  2. Add the eggs and beat well.

  3. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a separate bowl.

  4. Add the dry mixture alternately with the milk and vanilla.

  5. Stir in the black walnuts and pour the cake batter into the cake pan.

  6. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes at 350 degrees.

  7. Remove the cake from the oven and dust with powdered sugar.
