How to Bake Easy Chocolate Cake Eggs
Chocolate cake eggs are similar to cake pops, the tasty treats that transform cake and icing into colorful individual dessert balls. The eggs create a striking table centerpiece, or a welcome addition to an Easter basket nestled into a bowl of green-tinted coconut. Paired with scoops of ice cream, the cakes are quick and delightful birthday party treats. Bake up some uncomplicated chocolate cake eggs with your basic cake mix and brightly colored frosting.
Things You'll Need
- Chocolate cake mix
- Large bowl
- Canned icing
- Cake pop sticks
- Colored chocolate wafers
- Medium-sized microwave-safe bowls, one for each wafer color
- Styrofoam block
- Spoon
- Sprinkles
Instructions
-
Bake a chocolate cake according to a recipe or the directions on your box of cake mix. Let the cake cool for half an hour.
-
Crumble the cooled chocolate cake into small crumbles in a large bowl. Add half the contents of a can of icing to the cake. Mix the cake and icing together with your hands. Form the mixture into egg shapes with your hands. Put the eggs on a plate and refrigerate them for at least 1/2 hour. Push a cake pop stick 2 inches into a cake egg. The stick is used for dipping the egg into the chocolate coating and can be removed later.
-
Melt 12 chocolate wafers of each color in individual bowls in a microwave oven for 20 seconds. Stir the chocolate with a spoon. Repeat this until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Holding the stick, dip a chocolate cake egg in the melted chocolate.
-
Shake sprinkles onto the cake egg with a spoon while holding the stick and turning it. Push the bottom of the stick into a block of styrofoam to allow the chocolate to set and harden for 1 hour.
-
Remove the cake pop stick if desired and arrange the eggs on a platter.
