Who was glosskap and what did he have to do with maple syrup?
Glooscap is a legendary figure appearing in the oral traditions of the Miꞌkmaq First Nations peoples native to Canada's Maritime provinces and parts of Maine. As a central being in Miꞌkmaq tradition, Glooscap holds many roles, including culture hero, teacher, provider and healer.
When maple trees are tapped early spring for sap harvest it means Glooscap is having breakfast. When tapped again it means he has come from his morning hunt and his stomach needs filling!
