How hot is a ghost pepper?
Ghost peppers are one of the hottest chillies in the world, with a Scoville scale rating of between 1,041,427 and 2,200,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). This means that they are over 200 times hotter than a jalapeño pepper. For comparison, pure capsaicin, the main compound responsible for the heat in chilli peppers, rates between 15,000,000 and 16,000,000 SHU.
