How do you make margarine from vegetable oil?
Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
- 2 tablespoons cold water
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
1.) In the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade, combine all ingredients.
2.) Process until the butter is completely incorporated into the water and salt and forms a smooth, creamy spread.
3.) If you like, stir in the vanilla extract.
4.) Transfer the margarine to a container with a lid and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before using.
Tips
- For a softer spread, use less butter and more water.
- For a firmer spread, use more butter and less water.
- If you don't have a food processor, you can make margarine by hand using a pastry blender or two forks. Just be sure to mix until the butter is completely incorporated into the water and salt.
- To make flavored margarine, add 1/4 teaspoon of your favorite flavoring (such as almond extract, lemon zest, or orange zest) to the food processor along with the other ingredients.
- Margarine can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
