Are water chestnuts and the same?
Water chestnuts and horse chestnuts are not the same. Water chestnuts are edible and can be eaten after properly processed or cooked, they belong to the family Cyperaceae. Their scientific name is Eleocharis tuberosa. Meanwhile, horse chestnuts can't be consumed like water chestnuts, they produce inedible fruits that belong to the family Sapindaceae, and their scientific name is Aesculus hippocastanum or more accurately Acer hippocastanum according to modern plant taxonomy.
