How to Convert a Cinnamon Stick to Powder (4 Steps)

Cinnamon is a spice that typically found in baked goods, spiced drinks and many different savory dishes. Ground cinnamon can be sprinkled in a dish and eaten, while cinnamon sticks are taken out of a dish before it is consumed. If your recipe calls for ground cinnamon and you only have sticks, simply grind them up; one stick equals roughly 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon.

Things You'll Need

  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Microplane
  • Plate or bowl
  • Coffee grinder
  • Airtight container or zip-top bag

Instructions

  1. Grate the cinnamon stick on a a microplane (a microplane is a small, very fine grater). Be careful not to cut your fingers when using a microplane. Certain varieties of cinnamon may be difficult to grate with this method.

  2. Break the cinnamon stick into smaller pieces; 1/2 inch is a good length. Put the pieces into a coffee grinder.

  3. Grind the pieces until they are a very fine powder. Measure out the amount of cinnamon you need for the recipe.

  4. Put the extra powder into an airtight container or plastic zip-top bag. It will last roughly six months.
