Best Way to Store Asparagus (4 Steps)
Asparagus is a favorite vegetable of many people. Whether it is steamed, boiled, baked, grilled or sautéed, asparagus spears are a culinary treat that are as delicious as they are nutritious. Unfortunately, the prime season for asparagus is short and the plant can spoil quickly, so it is important to take proper precautions when storing the spears that you bring home from the grocery store. These simple steps will teach you the best way to store asparagus at home.
Things You'll Need
- Asparagus
- Knife
- Cutting board
- Glass
- Cold water
- Refrigerator
Instructions
-
Line the asparagus up on the cutting board and cut about 1 inch from the bottom of each piece. The bottom portion of the shoot can be thrown away. The larger portion at the top of the cut is edible.
-
Fill a glass with cold water. Any ordinary drinking glass will work, as long as it is wide enough to hold all of the asparagus spears and tall enough to prevent them from falling over the side.
-
Place the asparagus spears in the glass of cold water. The end that you cut should be completely submerged in water, with the spear tips sticking out of the top of the glass.
-
Put the glass in your refrigerator. Keeping the water and asparagus cold will help keep it fresh and crisp.
