How to Store Cherries
Ripe cherries are a perfect summer snack, but they need to be kept in the right conditions to stay fresh. Cherries kept at room temperature can go off very quickly, so refrigerate or freeze your cherries to keep them fresh as long as possible.
Refrigerating Cherries
-
Don't wash your cherries or remove their stems before refrigerating them; moisture can harm the fruit, so only wash them shortly before using them. Pack your cherries in an airtight container, being careful not to squeeze them in too tightly, then put them in your refrigerator. They'll stay fresh for 4 to 7 days.
Freezing Cherries
-
Frozen cherries will stay good for up to a year. There are two different ways to freeze cherries. To freeze cherries whole, lay them out individually on a baking sheet with their stems still attached and place them in the freezer. Once they are frozen, pack them into a plastic bag or container and keep them frozen. Alternatively, you can remove stems and pits before freezing, then pack your cherries with a mixture of sugar and water; the proportion of sugar to water will depend on how tart your cherries are.
