How to Store Green Onions (5 Steps)
Green onions are the early sprouts of ordinary bulb onions. You can find them in the produce section of grocery stores or at farmer's market in season. You can grow them in your home garden from sets or seeds. Gardeners usually plant them in early spring through summer. Green onions are high in vitamin A and a good source of vitamin C and iron, and they help lower LDL cholesterol. You can store them in the refrigerator for use within 5 to 7 days or freeze them for longer storage.

- Paper towel
- Perforated storage bags or airtight freezer bags
- Refrigerator or freezer
- Kitchen knife
- Cutting board
- Permanent marker

Buy or harvest green onions with bright green tops. Avoid onions with yellowed leaves. The bottom of the onions should be white and firm to the touch, and the roots should be intact. Harvest garden-grown onions when they are about 8 to 10 inches tall.

Wash the onions under running water. Clean thoroughly. Pat the onions dry with a paper towel and transfer to a cutting board.

Remove the roots with a kitchen knife. Peel the outer layer of the onion, if desired. Trim off all but 1 inch of the green leaves.

For short-term storage of a week or less, place the onions in the perforated storage bag and place the bag in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. Mark the date on the bag with a permanent marker.

Place the green onions in an airtight freezer bag, for long-term storage of eight to 12 months. Chop the onions into rings prior to placing them in the freezer bag. Mark the date on the bag with permanent marker. Place the bag in the freezer.
