How to Cut a Watermelon Into Small Wedges
Watermelon wedges usually find their way to summer picnics because the ice-cold fruit helps people cool off during hot weather. Cutting a whole watermelon may seem difficult, but you can easily slice the fruit into wedges safely with the proper technique. Slicing a watermelon with or without seeds requires the same preparation process, and once you are finished, your guests can enjoy the succulent produce by serving themselves.
Things You'll Need
- Mild dish soap
- Washcloth
- Serrated knife
- Plate
Instructions
-
Rinse the exterior of the watermelon with a mild dish soap and lukewarm water. Wipe off any dirt and debris from the watermelon with a washcloth so that it does not encounter the flesh when you cut it. Rinse the watermelon with cool, running water.
-
Start at one end and slice through the center of the watermelon with a serrated knife in the direction of the stripes. Once you cut halfway through the watermelon, turn the watermelon around and start cutting from the other end until you slice it in half.
-
Place both halves on the cutting board with the flesh side facing down. This prevents the watermelon from rolling around. Cut each section in half again from one end to the other end vertically in the same direction as the stripes.
-
Leave the watermelon flat on the cutting board. Slice wedges into the watermelon by cutting even sections. Cut opposite of the watermelon stripes and space the wedges 2 to 3 inches apart.
-
Lay the watermelon wedges out onto a plate. Keep the watermelon chilled in a covered container if you do not plan to consume the fruit immediately.
