How to Preserve Pears in Mason Jars
If you enjoy eating fresh pears and grow your own, you may have an excess of pears that could become rotten if they are not eaten. One solution is to preserve the pears by canning them. Unlike canned pears in a supermarket, you do not need to add sugar into the pears that you can at home. Once the pears have been properly canned, they will be free of bacteria and you can store them in your pantry or shelving for up to a year.
Things You'll Need
- Pot
- Apple juice
- Glass mason jar with lid
- Canning pot
- Canning tongs
- Wax pencil
Instructions
-
Place or pour 16 oz. of peeled and halved pears into a pot. Add in 16 oz. of apple juice, then heat the pot over medium heat until it begins to boil.
-
Pour the hot pear mixture into a 32 oz. glass mason jar, place the lid on top, and screw the lid ring onto the jar tightly.
-
Place the filled jar into a canning pot, and fill the canning pot with enough water to cover the jar completely.
-
Heat the canning pot over high heat until the water boils; then, boil the water surrounding the jar for one hour.
-
Remove the jar from the water using canning tongs and set the jar onto a flat surface to cool for three hours. The lid of the jar should be concave, showing that the jar is properly sealed. If the lid is not concave, repeat the process.
-
Write the date onto the top of the lid with a wax pencil. Store the canned pears in your pantry or on a shelf.
