How to Keep Cut Apples Fresh for Kids' Lunches
Children are more likely to eat and enjoy healthy lunch items like apples if you slice them into a kid-friendly pieces. Apple slices provide appealing and easy-to-eat finger food for lunchboxes when you keep them from turning brown when exposed to air. Acidic washes neutralize the enzymes that cause browning and keep the slices crisp, creamy white and fresh until lunchtime.

- Bowl
- Lemon juice
- Knife
- Sealable storage container
Instructions

Pour 1 cup water into a bowl and stir in 1 tablespoon lemon juice, which provides the acidic element to the wash.

Rinse the whole apple under cool running water and remove the core and stem. Peel the apple, if desired.

Slice the apple into wedges 1/2-inch wide. You can also cut it into sticks or cubes.

Place the slices into the bowl of lemon water immediately after slicing. Let them soak for two to three minutes.

Drain the lemon water from the slices. Pat the slices dry with a paper towel and store them in a sealed container until you're ready to pack the lunch.
