How to Marinate a Watermelon (4 Steps)

There more to watermelon than taking bites out of juicy wedges at a summer picnic.
Watermelon soaks up marinades and holds in flavors, which makes it a refreshing component for summer salads, cold soups, curries and barbecue fare. Pair the sweetness of watermelon with the spiciness or tartness of marinade ingredients for a balanced taste. Marinate watermelon cubes right before adding them to a meal or chill them for longer for a lightly picked flavor.

Things You'll Need

  • Balsamic, white wine or champagne vinegar
  • Bowl
  • Fresh citrus juice
  • Olive oil
  • Seasonings
  • Whisk
  • Knife
  • Melon baller, optional
  • Plastic wrap, optional

Instructions

  1. Pour an acidic ingredient, such as balsamic, white wine or champagne vinegar, into a bowl. Squeeze in fresh citrus juice such as lime, lemon or orange juice, then add olive oil.

  2. Add seasonings and fresh herbs, such as salt, pepper, cayenne, garlic, mint, basil or dill. Whisk the ingredients.

  3. Cut the flesh of the watermelon into cubes or scoop watermelon balls using a melon baller. Remove and discard any seeds or rind.

  4. Place the watermelon cubes in a large bowl. Pour the marinade over the cubes and toss to coat them. Marinate the watermelon at room temperature for at least five minutes before adding it to a meal, or cover the bowl with plastic wrap and marinate the watermelon for at least one hour to pickle it.
