What is Washington tree?

The Washington Tree

- The common name is the Washington tree but, it is scientifically termed as Sequoia washingtonia or also sometimes Sequoiadendron giganteum.

- This tree falls under the Family: Cupressaceae, and it is regarded as a coniferous.

- These species originate from Sierra Nevada in California.

- These are evergreen and colossal sequoia trees.

- Some other names it goes by are Sierra redwood, giganteum, Wawona Tree as also the big tree.

- They are considered large conifers; in fact, they form some of the most voluminous trees globally.

- Their trunk may become as giant as forty metres across or even wider, and may even become 50-85m, sometimes surpassing ninety metres high.

- These trees hold importance historically; in the olden days, Natives like the Tule used the bark of the colossal sequoia and its leaves to construct homes, to carve canoes of wood and use leaves from it in basket weaving activities.
