How to Cook Reindeer Steak (6 Steps)
A traditional favorite in Finland and throughout the Arctic, reindeer meat is similar in flavor to beef, but lower in fat and higher in omega-3 and other essential fatty acids. Reindeer's low fat content means that it mustn't be overcooked or it will become tough. Similarly, overcooking means risking the delicate flavor that is the meat's strongest point. You can cook a reindeer steak in a pan with just a little oil in a few minutes.
Things You'll Need
- Paper towels
- Black pepper
- Salt
- Thyme (optional)
- Red wine (optional)
- Olive oil or sunflower oil
- Frying pan
- Tongs
Instructions
-
Pat the reindeer steaks dry with paper towels. Sprinkle each side with black pepper and salt, pressing the steaks down to make sure the pepper sticks. Alternatively, you can rub the meat with thyme before cooking. A marinade of olive oil and red wine can help to tenderize and flavor the meat.
-
Heat a small amount of olive or sunflower oil over high heat in a frying pan. Add the reindeer steaks.
-
Cook the steaks for 2 to 4 minutes. The exact cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of the meat and how well done you want your reindeer steaks, but anything over 4 minutes will probably make the meat too tough.
-
Turn the steaks over with tongs. Cook them for an equal amount of time on the other side.
-
Remove the reindeer steaks from the heat. Allow them to cool for 3 minutes.
-
Serve reindeer steaks with roast vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, onions and potatoes. Sour cream and black pepper sauce often accompanies reindeer in traditional Norwegian cooking. The delicate flavors of reindeer also go well with fruit flavors such as lingonberries, cloudberries or currants.
