Can you put plastic ware in the bottom rack of dishwasher?
It depends on the type of plastic ware. Look for the recycling symbol on the bottom of the plastic ware. If it is a resin code 2, 4, or 5, then it is safe to put in the dishwasher. If it is not marked with a recycling symbol or is marked with a resin code 1, 3, 7, or 6, then it is not safe to put in the dishwasher. Avoid placing anything with a lid or a thin layer of plastic in the bottom rack. They may melt or get damaged due to the intense heat. The top rack of the dishwasher is the best place for any type of plastic.
Some types of plastic that should never go in the dishwasher, regardless of the resin code, include:
- Styrofoam
- Plastic wrap
- Plastic utensils from fast-food restaurants
