How to Make a Bread Slicer (4 Steps)

Are you tired of eating sandwiches that have half of the bread too thick and the other half too thin? Wish you could make perfect little slices of any width you wanted for delicious little snacks that you can show off at any gathering? You can make a neat little bread slicer that will cut any width slices you'd like, as thick as you'd like.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 pieces of oak, 6 inches wide by 12 inches long, 1 inch thick
  • (8) 3-inch self-threading screws
  • Wood glue
  • Screw gun
  • Table saw with fence
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Bread knife

Instructions

  1. Draw a line using your pencil and ruler that is measured at 1 inch from the bottom of each piece of wood. You can pick which side of the wood is the top. This measurement is simply to guide your cutting with the table saw so that when you cut, you do not completely sever the boards but leave 1 inch remaining.

  2. Make a guide for your knife. Adjust your table saw fence to make a 4-inch cut from the edge of the wood. Taking each piece of wood, butt them squarely against the fence, and proceed to make a cut through the top of the piece and end it at the pre-made penciled 1-inch line. Do this for both pieces of wood. When your two pieces of cut oak are held together, they should each have cut lines that are exactly the same. That is exactly what you want.

  3. Install the top of the bread slicer. Taking the final piece of wood, place it between the two cut pieces. You will have essentially what looks like a three-sided box.

  4. Glue and screw the pieces together, making sure the ends are flush. You will now be able to put a loaf of bread directly into the center of this three-sided box, and using the table saw, cut a mark as a guide for your bread knife. By merely positioning the loaf in your bread slicer, you can guide your knife down and cut any size piece of bread, at any thickness you'd like.
