The Differences Between Weber Silver & Gold
The differences between the silver and gold models of Weber brand outdoor grills are based on convenience and functionality. Both lines' models are made in multiple sizes, and all are designed to be used with charcoal. The largest size in the gold line, however, is not available in the silver line. Varying design alterations to improve ash disposal and accessories that improve overall performance make Weber's gold models just one step above its silver models.
"Smokey Joe" Grills
-
Weber's signature "Smokey Joe" is a portable charcoal grill. The differences between the silver and gold "Smokey Joe" are small but significant. Both offer a 14 1/2-inch diameter cooking area with a no-rust aluminum vent underneath and a glass-reinforced handle on the lid. The gold "Smokey Joe" has a depth of 16 1/2 inches, allowing room for more charcoal, and thus a hotter fire, than the 14 1/2-inch depth of the silver model. The gold model comes with a "lid lock," which is a metal handle attached to the bottom of the grill. It swings up to lock into the handle on the lid, which then acts as a carrying handle for the entire grill. When the lid lock is not in use, it falls to one side of the grill and can be used to hold the lid out of the way to one side.
"One-Touch" 18 1/2-Inch Grills
-
Weber's 18 1/2-inch "One-Touch" gold model is very similar to its silver counterpart. The primary difference is the gold model's removable, high-capacity ash catcher. The silver model's ash catcher is simply an aluminum plate mounted underneath the air vent to catch stray ashes. The larger ash catcher helps to avoid the need to turn the entire grill upside down to empty it of ashes. The gold model also has three glass-reinforced nylon handles compared to the silver model's two handles. Otherwise, the grills are nearly identical. Both are black, 35 inches high, 25 inches wide and 18 1/2 inches deep. Both have crack-proof, all-weather wheels with porcelain-enameled bowls and lids.
"One-Touch" 22 1/2-Inch Grills
-
Black, green and blue are the colors available for the 22 1/2-inch "One-Touch" gold model. The silver model is available in only black. Only two exceptions differentiate the 22 1/2-inch silver and gold grills from the 18 1/2-inch models. The overall size of each grill is larger, at 38.5 inches high, 27 inches wide and 22.5 inches deep. A factory-assembled, stainless steel "One-Touch" cleaning system is attached to the gold model's high-capacity ash catcher. The cleaning system can be used to scrape ashes at the bottom of the grill into the ash catcher. It makes the high-capacity ash catcher more efficient and is available on only one other model.
"One-Touch" Gold 26 3/4-Inch Grill
-
Weber's "One-Touch" Gold 26 3/4-inch grill does not have a silver-level partner. Features that go beyond the smaller gold models in the "One-Touch" line include a hinged cooking grate, allowing the side of the grilling surface to be lifted and more charcoal to be added to the fire. A built-in thermometer measures the inside temperature with the lid on. A "Tuck-Away" lid holder fastened to the lower side of the grill allows a griller to store the lid out of the way while cooking. The entire grill measures 42.3 inches high, 32 inches wide and 24.4 inches deep.
