How to Seed a Jalapeno

Jalapenos are a type of pepper that can add a lot of spice to any dish. These peppers are smooth and green, and relatively small in size. When adding jalapenos to recipes it is important to know that the more seeds you have with your pepper, the more heat your dish will have. If you completely remove the seeds from your jalapeno, the heat will be mild, whereas if you add many seeds your dish will be very spicy. Learning how to seed a jalapeno pepper, therefore, is important if you wish to use them in your cooking.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves
  • Cutting board
  • Jalapeno pepper
  • Knife

Instructions

  1. Put on a pair of gloves. Jalapeno pepper juice is very caustic and can burn your skin after prolonged exposure.

  2. Cut off the top of the jalapeno, containing the stem, and discard it.

  3. Slice the jalapeno down the middle, leaving you with two halves.

  4. Slice each half into halves, leaving you with four quarters.

  5. Scrape the seeds from each jalapeno quarter. If you wish to add a little heat to your dish, retain and add some of the seeds as you cook. Cut the pepper in any manner you wish. Most recipes call for diced jalapenos, but you may wish to use larger chunks.
