How to Broil Hamburgers in the Oven
Cooking burgers in the oven can offer a convenient and healthy way to satisfy your craving when you can't grill but you want a burger with less fat than one that has been pan-fried. The right shape, distance from the oven element and temperature insure your burger comes out juicy, tasty and tender.
Shaping the Burger
-
Because the fat in ground beef drains off as it cooks, the outer edges shrink more than the center. To get a flat burger that fills the bun, pat beef into a patty slightly larger than the bun, then make a slight indentation in the middle.
Broiling the Burger
-
Pre-heat the oven to 475 degrees Fahrenheit. Place patties on a wire rack that has been placed on a foil-lined cookie sheet. Position the sheet at least 3 to 4 inches from the heating element in the oven and cook the burgers for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the meat reaches a safe internal temperature of 160 degrees F. Because the oven provides heat on all sides, you do not need to flip the burgers. If desired, add cheese during the last minute of cooking.
