How to Substitute Soy Milk (7 Steps)
Soy milk is often the preferred choice for individuals who do not consume animal products or who cannot tolerate the lactose in cow's milk. Soy milk can be used in a variety of ways and in many different recipes. It should be substituted at a ratio of one-to-one with cow's milk making it an easy switch for anything from coffee beverages to casserole recipes.
Instructions
-
Replace a glass of cold cow's milk with a glass of soy milk. While plain soy milk can lack flavor, many sweetened varieties can be found such as chocolate and vanilla. Enjoy in moderation because of the sugar, but it is an ideal substitute beverage.
-
Order a soy latte the next time you visit your favorite coffee shop. Soy milk provides an alternative to cow's milk in specialty coffee beverages and most shops have it readily on hand.
-
Use soy milk with traditional warm breakfast cereals such as oatmeal. It will provide the same creamy texture. The best way to do this is to make the oatmeal ahead of time using water--you can make a few days' worth. When you reheat the oatmeal, add soy milk to create a creamy texture.
-
Add soy milk to pancake and waffle batters in place of any cow's milk in the recipe.
-
Make a soy smoothie. Combine soy milk with some previously frozen fruits such as pineapple, then add a fresh banana and blend well. You can even add a couple tablespoons of a soy-based yogurt for variety.
-
Substitute soy milk for cow's milk in recipes such as casseroles with cream or cheese sauces. If you find the soy milk does not thicken as normal, add some cornstarch mixed with water which will work as a thickening agent.
-
Use soy milk for soups such as pumpkin, butternut squash or creamy tomato. Often the recipes for these soups call for a half cup of milk or cream added at the end of cooking. You can substitute soy milk at this point.
