How to Microwave Garlic Mashed Potatoes (4 Steps)

If you are used to making mashed potatoes on the stovetop, microwaving them might seem counterintuitive. You can make tasty, smooth and creamy mashed potatoes this way, however, and in only a fraction of the time it takes to boil them. If you are a fan of garlic – or are serving others who are – you can even make garlic mashed potatoes in the microwave. One downside of making garlic mashed potatoes in the microwave is that you will need to chop or mince the garlic in advance. You cannot include whole cloves and mash them into the potatoes, as you might on the stovetop.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 lb. potatoes (approximately 2 large or 3 medium)
  • Fork
  • Large microwave-safe bowl
  • 1 cup milk
  • Small microwave-safe bowl
  • 2 to 3 garlic cloves, minced or chopped
  • Butter, sour cream, more milk, salt and/or pepper, optional

Instructions

  1. Poke several sets of holes in each potato with a fork. Make holes on each side of each potato, not just on one side.

  2. Put the potatoes into a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave them on high for 8 minutes. Check the potatoes to see if they are done by stabbing them with a fork. If they are still hard, turn them over and return them to the microwave for another 2 minutes, then check again.

  3. Pour the milk into the small microwave-safe bowl and add the chopped or minced garlic. Microwave on half power for 2 minutes, then check to see whether the garlic is soft. If not, return the mixture to the microwave for another 2 minutes, then check again. Meanwhile, mash the potatoes to your liking.

  4. Add the milk and garlic mixture to the mashed potatoes and mix thoroughly. Add butter, sour cream, more milk, salt and/or pepper to taste if desired.
