How to Cook a Cake Over a Campfire (5 Steps)
Camping is an inexpensive way to enjoy the outdoors. Cooking over a campfire is practical, and affords the opportunity to prepare foods in a different manner than normal. Most foods cooked at home can be prepared over a campfire. A little creativity -- and willingness to try new things -- is all that's required to bake cake over a campfire.
Things You'll Need
- Charcoal briquettes
- Matches
- Knife
- 6 oranges
- Grapefruit spoon
- Mixing bowl
- 8 oz. yellow cake mix
- Spoon
- Aluminum foil
- Grilling fork and spatula
- Plate
Instructions
-
Lay a mound of charcoal briquettes in your campfire pit. Approximately 30 charcoal briquettes are enough to cook a small meal and bake a cake. Light the charcoal with a match; allow it to burn until the briquettes turn gray.
-
Slice the tops off of six oranges to create lids. Set the orange lids aside. Scrape out the inside of the oranges with a grapefruit spoon.
-
Pour 8 oz. of yellow cake-mix in the mixing bowl. Add the amount of water specified on the cake-mix package. Stir the ingredients to form the cake batter.
-
Fill the empty orange peels halfway-full with cake batter. Place the orange-peel lid on top of the orange. Wrap aluminum foil around the batter-filled orange to protect the peel from burning.
-
Set the foil-wrapped oranges in the coals; allow them to bake for 20 minutes. Remove each orange with the grilling fork and spatula. Allow it to cool on a plate for 5 to 10 minutes before unwrapping the aluminum foil. Discard the orange peel lid. Eat the individual cakes directly out of the orange peel.
