How to Cook Crescent Rolls on a Campfire
Cooking on a campfire isn't limited to using a grill grate. In fact, using cast-iron and other fire-safe cookware, you can create "baked" goods on a campfire as well. Baked pastries like crescent rolls aren't difficult to make on a campfire, but some care is needed to assure your rolls turn out tender, flaky and delicious. Knowing how to make crescent rolls on a campfire gives you the ability to present a myriad of different flavors whilst camping or enjoying the great outdoors.
Things You'll Need
- Bricks or cinder blocks
- Cast-iron skillet
- Nonstick cooking spray
- Uncooked crescent rolls
- Metal spatula
Instructions
-
Add four large bricks or cinder blocks to the campfire, surrounding the logs and kindling before it is lighted. Light the fire as you normally would for any other campfire.
-
Spray the inside surface of the cast-iron skillet with nonstick cooking spray.
-
Spread out the formed crescent rolls in the skillet. They don't have to be spaced apart, because they are easily pulled apart after they are baked. You can use store-bought crescent rolls, which come in cans, or you can use your favorite dough recipe and form the crescent rolls 1 hour prior to cooking them.
-
Cover the pan with its lid and sit it on the grill grate over the center of the fire after it dies down to nothing but glowing embers. There should be little to no flame in the fire. The bricks or blocks used in the fire retain the fire's heat, creating an oven-like effect.
-
Remove the lid after 25 minutes and let the crescent rolls bake with the lid off for 10 more minutes. This provides the outer surface of the crescent rolls with a lightly crisp surface. Remove the pan from the fire.
