How to Cook Ribs in the Oven Slowly

If you love the sweet tenderness of barbecue ribs but don't have access to a smoker, don't worry -- you can prepare baked ribs that will fall off the bone right in your oven. Whether you make your own marinade or use a bottle of store-bought barbecue sauce, cooking ribs in the oven takes a few hours, so plan ahead. Since the long, slow process can begin as early as the day before, choose a day later in the week when you want to have ribs. If you wait until the mood strikes you, you may be stuck waiting an extra day.

Things You'll Need

  • Ribs
  • Barbecue sauce or marinade
  • Aluminum foil
  • Two large baking dishes
  • Oven
  • Spatula

Instructions

  1. Place your ribs in a large dish, and slather them in marinade or barbecue sauce. Refrigerate, allowing them to marinate overnight -- or at least two hours.

  2. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. Transfer your ribs into a large baking dish, meat side down. Cover it with foil, and place it in the oven for three hours.

  4. Pull out the baking dish, and flip your ribs over with a spatula. Baste them with sauce or marinade. Remove the aluminum foil, and put your ribs back in the oven for another 25 minutes.

  5. Check to make sure the ribs are done before serving. When you can easily split them apart with a knife, they are tender and finished. Serve them with a side of barbecue sauce.
