How to Bake Battered Pickles (8 Steps)
Those delicious deep-fried battered pickles, a Southern favorite, are hard to resist. If you are not a fan of fried foods, you can make a healthier version at home by baking them, instead. Pick your favorite jarred sliced pickles, dredge them in a seasoned batter and bake them to a golden brown. Add panko -- Japanese style -- bread crumbs to make the battered pickles even crunchier.
Things You'll Need
- Sliced pickles
- Flour
- Eggs
- Wire whisk
- Seasonings, to taste
- Panko bread crumbs, optional
- Baking sheet
- Vegetable oil
Instructions
-
Drain the pickles from the pickles juice and pat dry with paper towels.
-
Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Prepare a baking sheet with a light coating of vegetable oil.
-
Combine flour with eggs and seasonings to create a flour batter in a small bowl with a wire whisk. Use 1/2 cup of flour per egg. Seasonings can include salt, pepper, garlic powder and cayenne pepper, if you want to add spicy kick to the batter. You can also add a little beer to the batter for more flavor.
-
Pour panko bread crumbs into another small bowl. This is an option if you want a crunchier battered pickle.
-
Dredge the pickles one at a time into the flour batter, coating both sides, then into the panko bread crumbs if you are using them.
-
Lay the battered pickles on the baking sheet.
-
Bake the battered pickles for 12 to 15 minutes, then flip the pickles and bake for another 5 minutes, or until they reach a rich golden brown color.
