Toppings to Put on a BBQ Shrimp Taco
Tacos are a Mexican food item that have become a delicacy in other parts of the world with a multitude of different fillings and flavors. Seasoned shredded or ground beef is the usual filling, but meats like chicken and pork are also common choices. BBQ shrimp tacos are a variation that are unique on their own, and even more appealing with a creative topping selection.
The Rules
-
BBQ shrimp tacos lend themselves to the rules of experimentation and creativity when it comes to toppings. The smoky flavor from the grill and natural sweetness of the shrimp mean there really are no rules. Basically, lay out a variety of toppings on a big table and let all your guests go to town.
Spices
-
Spices are synonymous with tacos no matter what the base protein is, including BBQ shrimp. Before the shrimp go on the grill, you can mix together your own spice blend to add a lot of flavor. A mix of spices such as ground cumin, coriander, different chile powders, dried oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper will enhance the flavor of the shrimp. Coat them in olive oil before tossing in your spice mixture to make it stay on the shrimp nicely.
Sauces
-
A tasty sauce or liquid condiment always adds a certain element to BBQ shrimp tacos. Spicy tomato-based salsas or chipotle-based sauces will always have fans, but this is an area that lends itself to experimentation. Combinations that include soya sauce, lime juice, pineapple juice and garlic will give the tacos a tanginess that set them apart. Cream sauces with mayonnaise or yogurt bases can also make a big difference.
Vegetables
-
It's not likely that anyone will be satisfied with just BBQ shrimp and a sauce inside that tortilla. Some vegetables that make good toppings include shredded lettuce, diced tomato, sliced red onion, corn and slices of avocado. Although technically a legume, black beans also make a good topping for BBQ shrimp tacos. The sky is really the limit as vegetables add texture and flavor.
Extras
-
Even with a fully dressed shrimp taco fresh from the grill, you may want to add extras that might not be part of the normal topping selection. Shredded chicken, beef or pork can add to the flavor profile of the taco, and coleslaw might conquer the sauce and vegetable additions all in one go. Shredded cheese can work, but be careful not to choose something too sharply flavored or it might take away from the star of the taco, which is the shrimp.
