How to Cook a Frozen Ahi Tuna Steak in Minutes

Unless you are lucky enough to live in Hawaii, ahi tuna, also known as yellow fin tuna, is generally sold frozen. You must defrost frozen ahi tuna steak before cooking pan-searing or grilling it for a meal. These cooking techniques will help retain the mild flavor and firm texture of ahi, while getting your meal ready within 30 minutes. Eat the ahi tuna steak as a meal on its own, or add it to salads or sandwiches.

Things You'll Need

  • Bowl
  • Water
  • Fork
  • Skillet
  • Vegetable oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Lemon juice
  • Spatula

Instructions

  1. Fill a bowl with water. Remove the frozen ahi tuna from its packaging and place the fish in the water. Let it thaw in the water for approximately 20 minutes.

  2. To grill ahi, preheat the grill to a medium-high temperature. Season the ahi tuna steak by rubbing a little vegetable oil, salt, pepper and lemon juice over it, if you like. Place the fish on the grill skin side down. Cook for three minutes on each side, or until the fish turns flaky when you pierce it with a fork.

  3. To pan-sear ahi, place a skillet on medium-high heat. Rub seasonings of your choice on the ahi tuna steak. Add a little vegetable oil and heat for two minutes or until it starts smoking. Set the fish in the heated pan. Cook for three minutes on each side or until the fish is lightly browned.
