How to Carve an Avocado (6 Steps)

Avocados offer plenty of vitamin C, fiber, potassium, B vitamins and protein. They also lend themselves to recipes as diverse as salsa, tuna melts and vegetarian chili. But before you can access their creamy flavor, you have to carve the fruit to suit your needs. Whether it's sliced, cubed or cut into irregular chunks, adhering to some basic guidelines makes for an avocado-carving experience as smooth as the fleshy fruit itself.

Things You'll Need

  • Cutting board
  • Paring knife
  • Spoon

Instructions

  1. Place the avocado lengthwise on a clean cutting board. Hold a sharp paring knife in one hand and secure the fruit in place with the other hand. Press downward on the top part of the fruit, using your fingertips.

  2. Slice the avocado lengthwise, starting your cut at its narrow end. Slowly and carefully make one cut around the entire perimeter of the fruit.

  3. Hold the avocado securely in your palm, then apply firm pressure with your opposite palm. Twist the palms in opposite directions to cleanly halve the avocado.

  4. Slide a spoon between the exposed pit and the flesh of the fruit. Work the pit out of the fruit with a gentle scooping motion. Alternatively, strike the pit with a knife and then gently twist it.

  5. Place the two halves of the avocado on the cutting board, skin-side up. Cut each half lengthwise down the middle, quartering the avocado into large wedges. Grasp the skin at the edge of the wedge between your thumb and index finger. Slowly peel the skin toward you -- it will come of in one piece. Repeat for each wedge. Discard of the inedible skin. This leaves you with peeled avocado quarters ready to cut into virtually any shape you wish.

  6. Make parallel, vertical cuts to carve the avocado into thinner slices, suited for salads, sandwiches and sides. Make a grid pattern of horizontal and vertical slices to dice the avocado or carve it into chunky cubes, best for salsas, soups and dips.
